Paint manufacturer Benjamin Moore has joined the iPhone revolution, unveiling “ben Color Capture,” an iPhone application that provides instant color matching from anywhere in the world. Users take a picture of any color inspiration—whether from a sofa in their living room, a leaf in the forest, or a centuries-old floor in Tuscany—and the app will instantly match the hue to one of Benjamin Moore’s more then 3,500 color options. A favorites tool allows for easy color coordination and comparison.
The app will be available for free download starting June 1 from the AppStore Web site. –Katy Tomasulo

Sherwin-Williams also has an app available today that works pretty much the same. The Sherwin-Williams app is called ColorSnap.
I spent about 10 hours running these apps – and other color apps for the iPhone- through their paces this week… the functionality is too limited to be of real use to a designer and the accuracy is iffy on ColorCapture’s match.

Thanks for weighing in, Peggy. I don’t have an iPhone, so it’s good to hear how folks are finding the apps. An editor on our sister publication Remodeling tried it out, too: http://www.remodeling.hw.net/paints/paint-manufacturers-introduce-iphone-apps.aspx
